Entry from: Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland Entry Title: "Camping in Switzerland"
Entry:
"5 Sept 06 - arrive at Camping Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen, very impressed with the site, helpful staff and wonderful location . The glistening turquoise of the lakes made a trip to Brienz really enjoyable Wed 6 Sept - Jungfraujoch trip - took advantage of the excellent weather and thoroughly enjoyed the views, walked to Monsch hutte across a glistening snow field , a real treat to see the glacier snake down from the view and then visited the Sphinx viewpoint, Ice Palace etc. Had a look round Wengen on the way down. Thurs 7th Sept - Drove our Defender round the 4 passes - starting with Grimsel with its wonderful viewpoints, onto the Furkha and stopped at the Rhone Glacier and the "blue tunnel" . Down the Gotthard and back and finally onto the Susten. Again the weather made the circuit a really good day out with a lot of photo stops. Fri 8 Sept - walk through the valley to trummelbach falls which were really impressive and purchased a large cow bell, not the polished type. Afternoon - drove to Brienz for a look at woodcarvings and on the way back drove up to Grindenwald for a quick look at the village. Sat 9th Sept - this was the day of the Jungfrau Marathon so we decided to have a day out - drove over to Gruyeres and had a good look round the castle and then looped down back with a stop to shop in Gstaad. Another excellent and interesting trip. Sun 10th Sept - Schilthon trip. In some respects, disappointing. Being a weekend the cable car was packed with tourists to the point where it was uncomfortable and glad to step out onto solid rock but once at the revolving restaurant - the views were spectacular. Stopped on way down at Murren for a picnic by the miniature chess set in the village, under the gaze of the Eiger. Mon 11th Sept - travel to Tasch camping. The only recommendable memory of this site is the close proximity to the train shuttle to Zermatt. I shall say no more but we really did want to do the Hornlihutte trail and see the Matterhorn really close up . Tues 12th Sept - Train to Zermatt. Then cable car to Huri and then onto Schwarzee Paradise. Then hiked over to the Hornlihutte to get a real close up experience of the Matterhorn. A wonderful hike, trail clearly marked and excellent views but good hiking boots and backpack required for this one. This was actually my "favourite" of our itinerary. Afterwards we descended along the same route and had a stroll round Zermatt shops. Wed 13th Sept - travel to Lucarno campsite at the head of Lake Maggiore. The day we arrived a clear sunny day and had an afternoon swim in the lake. It was very much warmer than the mountain experience, however...... the weather broke on the Thursday 14th Sept and solid rain was forecast to continue for several days so we cut our holiday short by about five days and headed back for the ferry rather than sit out the floods of rain in a tent. We stopped over north of Lucerne at a Holiday Inn and then stopped for an overnight campsite stop in St Hubert, a small Belgian town before getting the ferry back to Dover on Sat 16th Sept."
